Palliative Care Unit, Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross, Dublin 6w

Area : 3365 sqm
Status : Completed in 1993

This building was the first Palliative Care Unit of its type in Ireland, designed to provide comfortable, homely accommodation rather than in the traditional institutional style. This building was runner-up in the CIF / European Building Magazine Awards in the Healthcare / Educational category. It set the standard for Hospice design in Ireland.

The design challenge was to create a place of solace and peace, encompassing several different yet related functions. The building has a large footprint, is single-storey throughout for all patient areas and highly serviced with Homecare, Day Care, and in-patient facilities. It provides specialist Palliative Care to people living with advanced and terminal stages of illness. The site afforded the opportunity of creating a large complex while retaining a domestic scale “home from home.”The maximisation of daylight, the use of non-uniform, irregular circulation routes helps to form interesting spaces and vistas by linking interior spaces to landscaped gardens.
